I have a document created by someone in Distiller 4.0 with no security settings at all. I need to copy a section of the document and paste it into a word document. I open it in Acrobat 5.0 or Acrobat Professional 6.0. When I select the text tool and copy the text then go to Word and paste the text, I end up with lines, some characters such as question marks etc. See below- any ideas why this is happening and how to get what I want, ie the text?

I have no idea what is happening. This is a 284 page doc so you can imagine I don’t want to scan it in and start again.

Some PDF files do not have text you can extract. You might like to
consider employing a copy typist as a temp…

Why can’t the text be copied if it is text and not an image?

In 6 Pro try Save as>Microsoft Word Document. Open that and see if you can extract text from there.

Hi Grafitti and thanks for the answer. Will have to find out why the “save as word” is not an option on the pdf at work. I have my own copy of 6 prof at home and it worked beautifully, so thanks again.

Sometimes fonts look normal but are all jumbled up inside. The normal
position for “A”, “B”, “C” and so forth is not used, so trying to
extract the text just confuses everyone. But when displaying the right
character is at the wrong position and it works.
