Those of you who are in possession of this lovely book, may kindly open
page/56 and also Harminder’s GK – II for details of the film YATEEM
The former in his book mentions of Md Rafi & Durrani’s songs in this
Can the son of Khurshid Anwar enlighten us about this. Also,Harminder
seems to have simply filled the page with absurd info!
I am extremely critical in this respect!
Afzal a. khan 2012-02-26 04:28:14
This sounds so rude and crude.
I am extremely critical in THIS respect.

Kyon bhaisaheb, aap ko mirchi lag gayee?
I too make so MANY errors,I adore criticism. Why not you?
Its a fact.Acept reality.Harminder is a thorough gentleman,I
repeat. Its the erroneaous info of songs that is being imbibed by
readers.Yes, its a fact – how can you repudiate!Even MG in his book is
WRONG.There are no songs sung by Rafi in this film.ANY TAKERS to
There is only one song: Aa jaa mere pyare, ummeed ki naddi ke
kinarey…by Rajkumari tuned by K.Datta.These are the initial wordings
& NOT what GK-II has published.Surely now,the detractors will ask me:
what is the proof??Well.its obvious! Or come to my
listening-sessions.I don’t expect anything from you in return.Aawo, aa
ke araam sey geeton ka rasa-swaadan karo, chhai peeyo, aur gaane
suno,phir chale jaana
Thats all Sir!

Although MG book contains many errors,
but about this particular information, he is
RIGHT. How is it……!
Fortunately Allah has distributed knowledge among His creations so that
it may be acquired by those who strive
for this honestly, without wearing any
Rafi did sang one song in this film –
mein uss sey karooN pyar
vo mujh sey karey pyar
I have already narrated how and why KA
left the film – Yateem. After his exit this
song was recorded in GMD’s voice for
GP record by either Gadeker(KA’s assiss-
tant) or by K.Datta.
Rafi’s version is available in the film only
if someone can get hold the print.
A quiz for JAY.
C.Ramchandra was a great fan of KA.
According to his own account he used to
listen to KA’s reharsals by standing at
the window of the reharsal room( this was
narrated by Tanvir Naqvi, who had a long
association with CR, in his article –
Filmi Sha’iree – published in weekly
Lail-o-Nahaar edited by Faiz in1962).
CR was insired by this song and composed a song in late 50’s.
Can JAY kindly solve this quiz?
P.S (HINT) The mukh.Da has somewhat
the same words in different setting.

Hi Jay , Have you ever played the following in your listening
1. The second recorded filmi qawwali after Zeenat.
2. The first Rafi – Amirbai duet .
Obviously not because you donot know and have not heard them .
If you know the songs Pl. get back and don’t go into hiding .
I don’t expect anything from you in return.Aawo, aa
Sjhhhtm 2012-02-27 04:52:45
Well.there have been a no.of qawalis after ZEENAT.And I have
personally heard them on record. But,I do not reckon them since they
lack that ‘appeal’ and have rejected them from a collector’s angle. For
instance, only testerday I cam across a qawali from the film,DAWLAT KE
LIYE sung by Khurshid Pervez. But it lacks that ‘appeal’.Now,coming to
your question,I feel the 2nd best qawali truly appealing is the Hafeez
Khan composed: Mera salam ley ja…from MERA SALAM (’57) rendered by
The first ever duet filmi duet of Rafi/Amirbai,I reckon is from ARAB
KA SITARA (’46) rendered by Amirbai/Rafi under the baton of Allah
Rakha. The record came on REGAL label. This was followed by some lovely
duets in SHAHNAZ (’48) tuned by Amirbai Karnataki herself! And this was
further followed by the BIKHRE MOTI(’49) duet to be further followed
by the duet-chorus from JANMASHTAMI(’50). Jay 2/12

I feel INPUT DATA is not enough to spot out the mysterious number.
If CR used to listen ‘chupke chupke’ to listen to KA’s takes during
the late ’50s as you mention (KA had migrated to Pak around ’53,to be
noted),the ONLY POSSIBLE film songs could have been from
either,SINGAAR or NISHANA or
NEELAM PARI.Unfortunately,I can’t find any of KA’s compositions
imbibed by CR to have inspired him in weaving out anything anything
‘even proximate’! I could be wrong still.
Rirfan6 2012-02-27 04:52:54
Khurshid Anwar was in Bombay since
1940. CR’s listening period which he mentioned to Tanvir Naqvi was early
and mid 1940s. KA and CR became friends afterwards. Naushad and Anilda
were always good friends of KA and
occasionally used to come to KA’s
reharsals and recordings.
Now coming to the quiz.
Film YATEEM ‘s song(available at
Surjit ji’s site) sung by GMD –
mein ussey karoN pyar
vo mujh sey karey pyar
Film NAVRANG’s song by Asha –
tum merey mein teri
Just humm or sing GMD’s song on
slightly slower rhythm and it is clear.
Sjhhhtm 2012-02-27 04:53:28
Yes, there was one duet from KUL KALANK (’45) too of Amirbai/Rafi : Topiwale babu…
P_kamalakar 2012-02-27 12:05:17
Your answer is 50 percent as you have mentioned the film
Arab Ka Sitara but not the song ‘ Roshan sa ek sitara islam hai
The qawwali is also from the same movie
‘ Vasl ki shab hai na khaali jayegi ‘ by Amir bai and party , it was
quite popular in my childhood .
The MD is S.Qureshi and have no idea if Alla Rakha ever
by that name
Regards , – kp

I perfectly agree with you that Allah has distributed knowledge among
his creations… and they are very colorful too!
Notwithstanding,we are,so far as this NG is concerned
(I,particularly, and may be others as well!),I speak from the
researcher’s angle and would like to delve into this about Rafi’s solo
on the film track in YATEEM (’45),as endorsed by the son of MD:KA
endorsing MG’s info in his book. OK?
How many historians of Indian cine music are aware of this
info?Atleast, I amj hearing it from you only after MG’s input. Please
forgive my inquisitiveness: You said you had narrated your father’s
exit from YATEEM .I am not aware of this narration as yet.
It was Sham sunder who actually spotted Rafi in Punjab.Satish
Batra, the famous producer tells that Rafi was a butcher’s son and MD:
SS happened to hear his voice one day.Having liked it, he had
approached Batra for utislising his voice for GUL BALUCH ,which was in
the making around ’44-’45.Circumstances led to the film’s incompletion
for a few years but VILLAGE GIRL ’45 Rafi did sing a chorus with GMD (
as told to me personally by GMD)in the film track, but the HMV
recording had to be completed in AL’s voice since both GMD and Rafi, a
total novice was not available on schedule.Durrani also told me that
in those days the recording was done on a soound track whose raw
material was imported and was costly.Rafi used to blunder sevaral
times resulting in wastage of raw stock.THIS POINT HAS TO BE BORNE IN
Naushad too, claims he gave a break to Rafi in PAHELE AAP (’44 or ’45).
Under the circumstances, how is it that Khurshid Anwar’s YATEEM
version of Rafi not documented anywhere about utilising Rafi for a
solo in YATEEM.One thing is certain.Mai karun unsey pyar on RECORD
bears the name of of the singer as GMD and composed by KA..its very
clear.I also ,agree the film is absolutely vanished or burnt leaving
no documentary evidence to substantiate your point.
There have been also occasions like for the songL Buool sake na
hum…by Lata in TAMASHA (’52’53) having been credited to MD: Manna
Dey on record who incidently was the assistant MD in that film.I
disputed with Manna Dey and told him it belonged to Khemchand’s who
died before the ‘recording take’,although he had completed the
notations.I, infact REMINDED him that Lata’s solo was a re-polished
one of Khemraj’s from PARDESI(’41).He asked Which one? I rendered and
hummed the song of Khurshid : Ab kahan basera apna..After some
pause,he admitted it was Khemraj’s finally!
Coming back to YATEEM,please provide more INPUT to this episode of
Rafi having sung on film track for YATEEM (’45)
and recorded by KA ….but no documentary evidence existing as of
One more intresting bit of info Durrani told me during our regular
long meetings in his house. The BAIRAM KHAN (’46) duet rendered by
KM/Shamshad on record was actually rendered by GMD/Shamshad on the
track. Now, you tell me, how is this to be believed? Also, I casually
asked him: Durrani Saheb;how is it that you having sung with so many
top MDs of your time never even managed to sing ONE SONG under
Khemchand Prakash !! To this he replied:Ofcourse,I did sing 2 numbers
in ZIDDI (’48) originally. But associate producer Ashok Kumarhad just
brought his brother KK from Khandwa to Bombay and introduced him to
Lhemchand and influenced him to utilise KK’s voice. That was it! GMD
was dropped in KK’s favour.!
Afzal a. khan 2012-02-27 12:05:24
The story that used to be bandied about in the
fifties was that Rafi was a barber’s son. But
all such stories may be just idle/malicious
speculation. What we should be concerned with
is the man’s musical talent.
Rirfan6 2012-02-27 12:05:46
It is true. But Rafi adopted singing as his
career in which he achieved that prominence and excellence which only
very few could get. Rafi visited Lahore just
once after the partition(1962-63?)to pay
homage at the mizar of famous saint
Hazarat Ali Hajveri RA. He sang some
naats and other aarifana kalaam.
Lahorites shouted ‘naee oay naii oay’.
It was most unfortunate that Lahorites
could not pay due respect to that great son of Lahore. Rafi became so upset
he never returned to the city again.
